~https://lnkd.in/eZHeiqUh La imagen: Michael Matti The Milky Way at Cannon Beach Landscape Photography by Michael Matti https://lnkd.in/eb9YTi2x

Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality. When we recognize our place in an immensity of light‐years and in the passage of ages, when we grasp the intricacy, beauty, and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling, that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual. So are our emotions in the presence of great art or music or literature, or acts of exemplary selfless courage such as those of Mohandas Gandhi or Martin Luther King, Jr. The notion that science and spirituality are somehow mutually exclusive does a disservice to both.” ― Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark https://lnkd.in/e67ubZqm

Did you know that a mystical philosophy played a key role in the Soviet Union's early lead in the space race? The philosophy of Russian Cosmism, pioneered by Nikolai Fyodorov in the late 19th century, proposed an audacious goal: to resurrect all of humanity and provide them a home among the stars. While this idea might sound far-fetched, it inspired practical thinkers like Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, now regarded as the father of astronautics. Tsiolkovsky focused on the second part of Fyodorov's vision - populating space - and his work laid the groundwork for the Soviet space program. This intersection of spirituality, philosophy, and science highlights the diverse influences that can drive technological advancement. It's a reminder that innovation often stems from unexpected sources.

We have the temptation to write our own life, instead of living it. Not all of our energy should be spent on finding the right name, the right title, or the right accolades. The dates, the numbers, the names, and the accolades - all of them exist mostly to reinforce hierarchy. Trying to work around that trap might require us to be inventive with our words, but most of the time it requires us to be intimate with our bodily sensations and our feelings. One possible method to do that is non-violent communication. Please go there and start learning how to speak like a giraffe: https://lnkd.in/eujJ3T9P

All this wave of "Computation by natural systems" https://lnkd.in/gQ-_hFrt feels to me like a very interesting revival, reframing, and rekindling of Varela-Maturana's autopoiesis.

The whole universe is needed for us to exist. How can we realize that from our head, heart, and gut?

Is the universe itself a black hole? There are long hard walks, where we feel we are moving forward very slowly, with great effort, step by step. In that walk, sometimes we ponder whether we should change directions. Our imagination is stimulated by thinking how walking a different path could feel likeThat's how I classify the work by fellow cosmologist Enrique Gaztanaga. He is exploring the idea that the universe itself might be a black hole.Enrique has been discussing for the last couple of years the theoretical foundations and implications of this concept, challenging conventional cosmological models. The proposal still feels far from being a direction where most physical cosmology will go, but I find it stimulating to ponder about. Here is a short summary (two minutes) of his proposal: https://lnkd.in/eBi5y875 Here is a longer presentation (one hour) https://lnkd.in/es5GzrGK

Seven questions to get lost and find your wayFrom mystics, saints, revolutionaries, activists, and marketers (!). Here are seven people and seven questions to ponder often, trying to get at the core of what it means to live an examined life in service of something greater than ourselves:Simone Weil: "How do I experience profound transcendence in my daily life?"Alexander Grothendieck: "Are we going to continue scientific research?"Alberto Hurtado: "How to contribute to society from the University?"Raimon Panikkar: "How to help build the next millennium of tradition?"Stephen Jenkinson: "How to live remembering that I am mortal?"Seth Godin: "How to be of service to a community?"Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui: "How to overcome a dependence on North Atlantic culture?"Picture: Image from page 90 of "Nicht-Euklidische Geometrie" (1893) https://lnkd.in/ePjF7hXE

Allons-nous continuer la recherche scientifique ?Four years after winning the Fields Medal, Grothendieck gave a talk at CERN with the title "Are we going to continue scientific research?"At this stage of his life, Grothendieck was doing a balancing act between mathematics and ecological activism. One of his claims is that in some future, the ecological disaster will be so clear and impactful that scientific research will simply stop being a priority. His talk wasn't a call to stop research to do ecological activism. It was instead a premonition on why activism or survival will naturally take the energy and the minds of people who would otherwise do scientific research.Grothendieck's talk clearly anticipated today's dilemmas: "Has the Last Great Space Observatory Already Launched? Astronomy's future may be slipping away—one climate disaster at a time" https://lnkd.in/eMU25CMTPlease listen to the talk https://lnkd.in/et2G-33a
