Butcher's bankruptcy trustee, James R. Martin, has filed his second inventory in U.S. Bankruptcy Court of Butcher's assets, which will be liquidated. Creditors say Butcher owes them more than $65 million. The inventory includes $3 million in promissory notes, 1,338 shares of Union County Bank stock and 2,000 shares of United Southern Bank of Morristown stock.
The estate also includes two speedboats, a gold-plated model of an oil rig, title to a condominium in Stuart, and numerous shares of stock in defunct financial institutions Butcher once controlled. Since February 1983, nine Tennessee banks with ties to Butcher and his brother, Jake, have been declared insolvent because of loan losses totaling more than $500 million. TVA reorganizes nuclear power program CHATTANOOGA (AP) Individual nuclear power plants will gain more responsibility and resources under a major reorganization of the Tennessee Valley Authority's nuclear power program, says Hugh G. Parris, TVA manager of power. The current program, controlled by TVA's Chattanoogabased Division of Nuclear Power, will be scrapped in favor of one consolidating the agency's nuclear operations and emphasizing each plant's onsite capabilities, Parris announced Monday. "This is a major change in the way we have managed our nuclear program," Parris said, noting the move is designed to make each plant more responsible for and efficient in its operation. Deputy Manager of Power James P.
Darling will head the new nuclear power program, which will assume the functions of the Division of Nuclear Power and other branches. Between 120 and 150 of TVA's 600 Division of Nuclear Power workers in Chattanooga will be reassigned to the nuclear plants over the next few months, said spokesman Bill Steverson, but the reorganization will not cause any layoffs. House eases TSEA's dues checkoff rules NASHVILLE (AP) The House has approved a bill to make it easier for the Tennessee State Employees Association to gain new members, despite a warning that the measure is a step toward public employee unions. The measure, approved 74-17 Monday night and sent to the Senate, would let the TSEA solicit new members among the non-faculty at state colleges, technical institutes and vocational schools. The bill also lowers from 25 to 20 the percentage of state workers at a site who must join TSEA for the association members to have their dues automatically deducted from their paychecks.
Gov. Lamar Alexander opposed the legislation and wrote about 1,000 business executives that the bill "will dangerously change the delicate balance of labor-management relations for years to come."
