I’m sharing all the inside secrets to creating your very own Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake that is every bit as yummy as the original. You’ll be shocked by how easy and inexpensive it is to make your own!
Copycat DQ Ice Cream Cake
I Love Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake! The problem is, it’s fairly expensive and not everyone lives near a Dairy Queen. I’ve perfected the way to create it at home using this copycat DQ Ice Cream Cake recipe. I’ve picked up a few tips along the way from former DQ employees who were willing to share their secrets. Here is the recipe I’ve used quite a few times, to recreate the goodness!
What You Need
Here’s what you need to get started, creating a totally awesome ice cream cake at home:
1 Regular Size Package Oreo Cookies or Store Brand Chocolate Cookies
1 Quart Container Vanilla Ice Cream (or flavor of your choice)
1 Quart Container Chocolate Ice Cream (or flavor of your choice)
1 Cup Chocolate Syrup, Hot Fudge or Magic Shell (enough to coat crumbs and turn into a thick “goo” that is easily spreadable) *Try this:Smucker’s Magic Shell Chocolate Topping
Once you’ve gathered the appropriate supplies and ingredients, here is what you do:
I started withvanilla and chocolate ice cream, but it’s up to you to use whatever flavors you like!
Begin by letting the ice cream soften just a tad so it is workable but not soupy and melted (it’s an art to achieve the best consistency). Butter the bottom and sides of your pan, then spread a thin layer of vanilla ice cream on the bottom and sides, all the way to the top. Refreeze for a few minutes to harden this layer before moving onto the next.
Spread a layer of chocolate ice creamto fill the pan half way up, then refreeze.
Fill a plastic bag with Oreo cookies (or store brand), and use a rolling pin to crush them into fine crumbs. You may also try putting them in a food grater or blender. The smaller the crumbs the better! Mix the crumbs with chocolate syrup and spread over chocolate ice cream.
Spread a layer of vanilla ice cream over the crumbs, then cover and freeze.
Let set out for a few minutes then scrape the sides with a rippled orridgedspatula to create a lined look. Put back in the freezer to refreeze.
Mix equal parts whipped topping and ice cream and spread over top. Cover and put back in freezer. Let thaw forapproximately10 minutes before attempting to cut.
I used the remaining Oreos to sprinkle on top. If you want to write anything on top, I would suggest waiting until ready to serve and use a tube of cream decorators icing, not a jell.

There's definitely something to love about all the different kinds available, but when it comes to a Dairy Queen ice cream cake, that middle layer of chocolate fudge along with the chocolate crunchies is pure heaven.
Those chocolate crunchies are made using the same delicious cookies from our Flying Saucer Ice Cream Sandwiches. This ain't no ordinary cookie crumble. This is a patented Carvel delicacy at its finest.
Frost with whipped cream: Whip the cream with the powdered sugar and vanilla until it forms soft peaks. Use an offset spatula to spread the whipped cream all over the cake. If desired, use a piping bag to create rosettes or other decorations.
What are DQ (Dairy Queen) cakes made of? The regular cakes are made out of a top layer of vanilla, a fudge and crunch middle layer, and a chocolate ice cream bottom layer.
The Cupid Cake is a trendy, heart-shaped cake with a base layer of DQ's vanilla soft serve, a center of red velvet cake pieces and cream cheese icing. It's topped with a layer of Red Velvet Cake Blizzard. The cake is "perfectly sized for two" so you can share with your significant other.
How long is a DQ ice cream cake good for? In the freezer it should keep indefinitely, but it can get freezer burn or pick up the tastes of other stuff in the freezer, so it's not a good idea to leave it too long. It would still be edible but it would taste bad.
You'll need just five ingredients to make this homemade ice cream cake recipe: Cake mix: Start with a store-bought chocolate cake mix. Water: Add a cup of water to the cake mix. Eggs: Three eggs add richness and help bind the batter together.
Geode cakes are stunningly decorated layer cakes meant to mimic the famous natural formation of rock and precious and semiprecious stones. Pieces of the finished and frosted cake are cut out, and then the cavity is filled with edible crystals made out of rock candy.
The cake features layers of vanilla, rainbow-flecked birthday cake, Cheetos cheddar frosting, vanilla frosting, and Cheetos and birthday crumbs sprinkled on top and in between layers.
The texture remains luxuriously light instead of frosty. Stabilized whipped cream also has an unmatched consistency. While feather-light and airy, it's still firm enough to retain its shape, and the secret ingredient that makes stabilized whipped cream the perfect ice cream cake frosting is unflavored gelatin.
Take the store-bought ice cream out of the freezer and let it sit at room temperature for about 5-10 minutes. This will allow it to soften slightly and make it easier to work with. Once the ice cream has softened, transfer it to a mixing bowl.
Regular cake has its limits—there are only a handful of cake and frosting flavors to choose from. But you can use literally ANY ice cream flavor in an ice cream cake—there are no wrong answers here. And since our recipe makes a two-layer treat, you get to use two different flavors.
Dairy Queen ice cream cakes are made with layers of vanilla soft serve, chocolate soft serve, cold fudge and cookie crunch, decorated with your choice of designs. Blizzard Cakes substitute the chocolate ice cream with your favorite blizzard mix.
He instructs to make his Queen's Cakes with currants, washed, picked and rubbed clean, and flavourings which are a little Mace and orange flower water. He also uses a pound each of butter, flour, sugar and currants but about 5 modern eggs, omitting half the whites.
Cake balls are small spheres of reconstituted cake crumbs, coated with chocolate or frosting. They are made by blending cake crumbs with icing, shaping them to form a ball and then dipping them in a coating, such as melted chocolate.
